Sailing area Markermeer
The marker sea is the south part of the former Zuiderzee, today called IJsselmeer. By two locks, in Lelystad and in Enkhuizen, the Marker sea is connected with the north part of the IJsselmeer. The area is named by the small island Marken, which is connected with Monnikendam by a dike. Characteristic for this former fishing village, are the houses, built on stakes, the special costumes of the place and "the horse of Marken", the lighthouse, in whose feature in the dawn lokks like the outlines of a horse. Further places at the marker sea will be the famous Volendam, well knowed for the eel, or the Batavia shipyard in Lelystad.
